Stella Matutina Museum
Two Centuries of History at a Sugar Factory
A ten-minute drive away, on the hills above Piton Saint-Leu, a former sugar mill has been transformed into one of the island’s most beautiful museums. Stella Matutina tells the story of two centuries of Réunion’s history through sugarcane: slavery, the indentured labor system, the great sugar-producing families, and the machines that are still running right before your eyes.
The exhibition is immersive and appeals to both children and history buffs alike; plan on spending a good two hours there. Our tip: the “From Salt to Sugar” trail connects Pointe au Sel to the Stella site on foot.
It’s a great way to combine both visits in the same morning, before heading back down for lunch by the sea in Saint-Leu.
