Saint-Leu Market
A colourful immersion into Réunion’s traditions and local produce
The Saint-Leu waterfront market is the unmissable Saturday morning gathering. From 6 am, stalls fill up while the air fills with the scent of ripe fruit, spices, and freshly brewed coffee.
No need to rush — the market is best explored at the leisurely pace of conversations with producers and impromptu stops. Every stall celebrates the bounty of Réunion’s land and sea, in an idyllic setting beneath the shade of casuarina trees.
Colours explode across the stands: mangoes, Victoria pineapples, papayas, and lychees spill over the crates. A little further on, fresh fish glisten on ice alongside local vegetables such as manioc, chayote (also known as chouchou), and palm heart. Let yourself be tempted by a cone of freshly fried samoussas, a few bonbons piments, or a traditional péi cake.
In your suitcases, slip a few local spices, a Bourbon vanilla pod, and a bottle of infused rum (rhum arrangé) with exotic flavours. You can also find traditional handicrafts at the permanent craft market, open Tuesday to Saturday until 6:00 pm. You will bring home precious memories that tell the story of your stay in Saint-Leu much better than a postcard.
