Diving in Saint-Leu

From a first dive to swimming with humpback whales

In Saint-Leu, the sea is not simply admired from the beach or through your apartment window — it is explored beneath the surface, in one of the most renowned diving areas along the west coast.

Every dive in the Réunion Marine Natural Reserve reveals spectacular biodiversity. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, the many dive centres based at Saint-Leu harbour offer introductory dives from the age of 8, certified training courses and night dives.

Marvel at colourful drop-off coral arches, colonised wrecks, and — if you are lucky — marine turtles, rays, barracudas and groupers. Along the way, you may encounter the Picasso triggerfish, the butterflyfish or the discreet lionfish lurking among the corals. The underwater treasure hunt in Saint-Leu can begin as early as your first snorkelling session.

From July to October, listen out for the song of humpback whales resonating sometimes through the depths. It is hard to remain unmoved when their vocalisations accompany your dive. To observe them offshore, book a sea excursion with a provider committed to a respectful approach to cetacean watching. You may catch a glimpse of a fin, a spout, or a calf surfacing.
