Piton de la Fournaise
A one-of-a-kind volcanic hike
Around two hours from Saint-Leu, Piton de la Fournaise is a reminder that Réunion remains an island in constant motion. Rising to 2,632 metres, one of the world’s most active volcanoes continues to shape the island’s landscape through its frequent eruptions. Its dark slopes, ancient lava flows and craters tell a geological story that is still being written. You have no doubt already seen those striking images of glowing lava splitting the Réunion night.
Before heading up towards the volcano, stop at the Cité du Volcan in Bourg-Murat. This museum traces the island’s volcanic history through interactive exhibitions for visitors of all ages.
