Waterfalls

From hidden natural pools to vertiginous cliff faces

Réunion’s waterfalls are just as much a part of the landscape as its beaches and cirques. From Saint-Leu, head south towards the wild South Coast near Saint-Joseph to reach the Grand Galet waterfall (also known as Cascade Langevin) nestled in the Langevin Valley. It is one of the island’s most photogenic spots, featuring numerous streams of water cascading down roughly 45 metres into a wide natural pool. In this idyllic setting, you can cool off after a Creole picnic at one of the many tables highly popular with locals on Sundays. The steady roar of the waterfall and the lush, vegetation-covered cliff walls will keep you company during this peaceful break.

In the Cirque de Salazie, open your window wide to spot the Voile de la Mariée (Bridal Veil) waterfall right from the road. Its long white train seems suspended along the emerald cliffs. For a more immersive experience, take one of the trails leading down to the pools at the foot of the falls. Higher up along the same ramparts, the Cascade Blanche plunges down 640 metres of cliff face, ranking Réunion among the most impressive waterfall destinations in Europe.

On rainy days in the highlands, the spectacle becomes even more magical, though it requires greater caution near rivers and streams.
